Women Leading Climate Change Action on Palawa Country, NW Lutruwita
Penguin and Wynyard, TAS | Saturday, 4 March; Wednesday, 8 March 2023

WCC Steering Circle member, Cheryl Durrant, and admin volunteer, Nettie Hulme, both live in NW Tasmania. They put their heads together about holding IWD 2023 events in their little corner of the world.

It was a perfect opportunity to introduce WCC’s Charter for Change to this vibrant community and help breathe ‘life’ into it by inviting people to reflect on ways to implement the actions contained therein.

Cheryl and Nettie organised events in Penguin (Saturday, 4 March) and Wynyard (Wednesday, 8 March). Each had a brief introduction to the Charter followed by an invitation to reflect on how women, individually or collectively, and in their local community, can lead and participate in Charter-aligned actions.

There was much excited interest and happily three local Mayors all accepted: Teeny Brumby -  Burnie City Council; Dr Mary Duniam - Waratah Wynyard Council; and Cheryl Fuller – Central Coast Council, all fine examples of women in leadership roles.

After the event, an attendee in Penguin wrote:

“Thank you for all the planning and care that went into making Saturday’s workshop such a success. It really was a celebration and great tribute to International Women’s Day. I came away refreshed and with lots to think about what matters and how to be most effective in ending atmospheric pollution and associated harms.

Thanks so much for creating the opportunity to share and explore and contribute to the Charter For Change. And, thank you for your ongoing commitment to bringing women’s voices to the climate change conversation in so many ways”

And an attendee at Wynyard wrote:

“I feel I didn't thank you enough last night for the great job you both did for the IWD event. There was a very good vibe resulting from it of hope and possibility, which I guess is one of the things you were aiming for, so well done!

If there is enough interest I think it would be good to have at least one follow up (which LWT would organise) say in 3 months time.. It was very good having the 3 Councillors there, and I think that really sparked some fruitful discussion.”
